Evaluating sources is a crucial step in the information retrieval process. Ask yourself: Does this source meet your needs?
Does the publication address your topic?
Scholarly vs. Popular
Articles: Is it peer-reviewed or referee-filtered?
Books: Is it general nonfiction or research literature?
Is the author well-known and respected?
Has the source been cited in other works?
Is the author’s institution reputable?
Why was the text published? Does it have a specific agenda?
Does the publication use credible and authoritative references?
The most up-to-date information is often found in international journal articles.
Even recent articles may cite older research—always trace back to the original source and cite that.
