Mendeley is a free reference management application. Mendeley can be accessed both through the user interface installed on your computer and via the web.

Mendeley makes research faster by making references easier to make and format.

Creating Mendeley account

  1. Get started by creating a Mendeley account for yourself (Create a free account) by using any email address. 
  • Note! If you already have an account with one of Elsevier’s services, such as Scopus or ScienceDirect, you should use the same account in Mendeley as well. In that case, you can log in directly to Mendeley.

2. Write the email address you want to use for creating the account. Click then "Continue" and select your password..

3. After signing in you will find your Mendeley – library on the top right corner.

4. You can also search articles in Mendeley and add them to your own library.

Mendeley Addings

You may need to install the following add-ins.

  • Web Importer is an add-in that enables you to save references and pdfs to your Mendeley account. It works on Chrome, Firefox and Edge web browsers. After installing you will find the red Mendeley logo on the browser next to the address field.  
  • Mendeley Cite is a Microsoft Word add-in, which enables you to use references inside texts and create bibliographies. It is already available in the Word Online (o365) for the students and staff of Lapland University Consortium.
    • In the desktop version of Word of Lapland University, you can install the utility from the Insert tab > Get addings. Choose Admin managed tab > Mendeley Cite.
    • In your own Microsoft Word you can install it directly from the Office Store.
    • After installing Mendeley Cite, you will see it on the Word References tab.
