Research Data Management for Students: A check list for data management

A check list for data management

  1. Plan: Familiarize yourself with the guidelines for data management and plan how to manage your data well in advance of the data collection. You can complete the plan as the research progresses.
  2. Know your data: Specify what data you collect, produce, or use in your research.
  3. Identify personal data: Think carefully about whether you collect or use personal data. Our Data Protection Officer recommends that students should avoid the processing of personal data and, in particular, special categories of personal data. Always consult with your supervisor about the processing of personal data before collecting any data.
  4. Take care of data protection: Read the data protection guidelines and follow them carefully. Protect other confidential information as well.
  5. Get permissions: Make sure you have permission to collect and use your data. You may need, for example, a research permission or a consent of the research subjects. Always pay attention to copyright.
  6. Take care of information security: Find out where and how you can safely store your data and how they should be protected.
  7. Organize and describe: Think carefully about how you organize your data, how you name the files, and how you describe your data so that you understand it yourself and, if necessary, others understand what the data is about.
  8. Think about the future: Plan how long it is necessary to keep the data and how you will destroy or open it for others to use.
