Visibility and Evaluation

LaCRIS

LaCRIS is the research information system at the University of Lapland. It gathers and makes available information on the scientific and artistic activities of the University. LaCRIS offers the opportunity to have a personal researcher profile that enhances your visibility and findability. The profile also connects you to the University of Lapland

In your profile you can highlight your scientific and artistic activities and expertise in your own words. It is also possible for example to add links to your project websites.

You can add information also from the previous phases of your career. It is possible to link your profile to ORCID ID and make it easier to transfer information between affiliations. Linking your profile to ORCID ID reduces the need to register information in various services.

ORCID

ORCID iD (Open Researcher and Contributor ID) is a persistent digital identifier for researchers. It solves problems with changing names, researchers with identical names and confusions created by different spellings.

The University of Lapland recommends using ORCID iD and some publishers and funders require it. It reduces the need to enter personal and publication information in several systems. ORCID iD can also make it easier to transfer publication information between research organizations as you can link your ORCID iD to several other researcher identifiers as well as to LaCRIS. You need an ORCID iD to make a profile in Research.fi.

In ORCID you own and control your data. You can decide what information is public and what is only shared with trusted parties. ORCID is independent and non-profit organization.

Other researcher identifiers

In addition to ORCID iD you can enhance your visibility, improve networking and ease the transfer of publication data between affiliations by creating other researcher identifiers and profiles in services targeted to the scientific community. The identifiers help others to identify you and your publications for example if your name or affiliation changes, there are multiple name variants, when spelling mistakes occur or in the case there are various researchers with the same name. Using a researcher identifier improves scientific publication-based research activity evaluation and statistics compilation.

Scopus author ID is created automatically for every author of the articles indexed in Scopus. You can easily follow the citation numbers of your articles and see your h-index by using your Scopus author ID. It is possible that multiple author identifiers accumulate to a single researcher. Scopus provides researchers a possibility to request combining their profiles or correcting their personal information. You should log in to Scopus with HAKA thorugh LUC-Finna. It is possible to accept data transfers between Scopus and ORCID.

Web of Science ResearcherID makes it easy to follow the impact of your own publications according to the Web of Science database in certain fields of science. Log in to the service in LUC-Finna with HAKA. You must register to the service and link new publications to the profile by yourself. You can link your profile to ORCID, transferring your publication and profile information between the systems.

Google Scholar profile enhances your visibility in Google Scholar and you can easily see your Google Scholar based h-index by using your profile. You must create the profile yourself. Please notice, that if you create the profile with your University of Lapland email address, you can only use the profile while you are affiliated to the university.

ISNI is an identifier of persons and public organizations based on an international standard.

The h-index and citation numbers that were visible in the University of Lapland's research portal until 2024 have been hidden from the public portal. The information can still be found in the researcher's private editing view. The h-index and citation numbers in the portal are based on the information in Scopus.

Research.fi - information on researchers and experts

Research.fi service is maintained by the Ministry of Education and Culture and collects and shares information on research conducted in Finland. The service improves the location of information and experts on research and increases the visibility and societal impact of Finnish research. Since 2022 the service includes information on researchers and experts working in Finland. The aim is that the expertise and up-to-date contact information of researchers and experts in different fields will be available in one place.

The service makes it possible for researchers to maintain a national researcher profile that is not dependent on affiliations. The profile will remain active in case of changes in affiliations and during pauses in funding.

Researchers affiliated to the University of Lapland can create a profile and transfer information from ORCID and selected research organizations. Data transfers between Research.fi and the University of Lapland will begin in 2024. Users log in to the tool with Suomi.fi identification and upon creating the profile import their ORCID-data. The tool is available in Finnish, Swedish and English.

Networking and visibility services

You can increase the visibility, accessibility, and impact of your research and artistic work with various networking and visibility services. Online presence increases interaction and networking with the researcher community, research funders, other professionals, and potential employers. You can also share your publications and other materials as long as you make sure you have the right to do so.

Altmetrics

You can follow the conversation and the attention your research outputs get on social media and other online services using altmetric tools. It is possible to assess the visibility of your research outputs based on, for example, the number of downloads and the references they receive in the news, blog posts and social media. This does however not correlate with the quality of your research.

Altmetrics is a response to the much criticized traditional means to measure the impact of research like h-index or citation analysis. It is a faster way to get an overview of the visibility and social impact of research.

So far, the University of Lapland has not utilized the altmetrics monitoring services. The library orders monitoring services from other university libraries when needed.
