Persistent identifiers (PID)

Persistent identifiers (PID) identify online resources by creating a permanent link to them. Even if the data is transferred from one location to another, the identifier will remain the same and it functions as a link to the new location of the data. Three frequently used permanent identifiers are DOI (Digital Object Identifier), URN (Uniform Resource Name) and Handle.

A persistent identifier can be given to a person as well. For example ORCiD is this kind of researcher identifier.

ISBN and ISSN numbers given to publications are also persistent identifiers even though they do not work as links online as such. For example URN can contain a publication's ISBN

When for example images, publications or data sets are archived, the service will take care of providing an identifier.
